Levulan Photo Dynamic Therapy in Toronto

Levulan Photodynamic Therapy is a special skin treatment in which the application of a topical medication called Levulan is combined with exposure to IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to kill abnormal skin cells. These abnormal cells are responsible for a number of undesirable skin-related conditions.

Avenue Skin Care in Toronto performs this very effective treatment for most of these conditions, which include skin which has been sun-damaged, is freckled, and has uneven texture and / or irregular pigmentation.

One of the most sought-after treatments from the skin professionals at Avenue Skin Care, using Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, is for acne treatment. This treatment is successfully performed to unclog and minimize pores, and reduce oil glands, which are the root cause in the formation of acne.

The Treatment Process

First, your skin is prepared by removing the outer layer of dead skin, using microdermabrasion or a gentle skin scrub.

The Levulan solution is then applied to the skin that has been either affected by acne or is in need of rejuvenation. The Levulan is absorbed into your skin, with the solution attacking the abnormal skin cells. An anaesthetic cream may be applied, prior to the light exposure, and you will be given special goggles to wear to protect your eyes during the treatment. After that, the solution is activated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) beams. The abnormal cells are then destroyed by the combination of the solution and light.

During the treatment you may feel some stinging, tingling, prickling, or burning sensations. This is usually temporary, and will subside following the treatment.

After the Treatment

You can return to normal activities immediately following the treatment, as long as you avoid bright light and direct sunlight for 48 hours.

Special precautions after your treatment

The skin specialists at Avenue Skin Care will advise you on a number of precautions that must be taken, following your Levulan Photodynamic Therapy. Please be sure to follow their instructions carefully.
